Dept Marketing Statement
The Office of Campus Counsel delivers ethical, timely, efficient, and high quality legal services to the University of California at Santa Cruz, as well as campus entities located in and around Santa Cruz. Its services include: drafting and negotiating agreements; providing advice, counsel, and interpretation of laws, regulations and policies; and assisting with development of effective compliance and risk mitigation strategies to facilitate the University's complex operations.  
As representatives of Chancellor's Office, immediate staff are expected to model the UCSC Principles of Community in their interactions with senior leaders, faculty, students and staff at all levels of the organization, with colleagues throughout the UC system and in their interactions with agencies, organizations and individuals outside of the UC system. Job Summary

Provide paralegal support to the Campus Counsels.  Assignments are typically on a project basis where the incumbent is expected to perform research, in-depth factual investigations involving interviews and document reviews, initial contract review, and revew of legal correspondence. Identify further investigation that may be necessary. Organize and analyze material and information obtained. Prepare correspondence, memoranda and other documents such as declarations and subpoena responses, and communications with witnesses, University officials and others. Communicate on behalf of assigning attorney with University personnel, outside counsel representing The Regents, opposing counsel and outside agencies. Present information and materials obtained to the assigning Campus Counsel for instructions and determination of subsequent action. A successful candidate will carry out these functions with appreciation for the mission and responsibility of a university serving a diverse region and state and a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

JOB DUTIES
20% - Substantial responsibility for legal assignments, to include managing the organization of cases and programs, responding to subpoenas and discovery requests, developing procedures, researching and drafting updated legal policies, procedures and practices for the ofice.Provides analysis of data and policies pertaining to moderate to complex projects, policies, processes and / or functions. 

20% - Collects and prepares information for use in discussions, meetings of high level management and external constituents and prepares reports and / or analyses summarizing information on the assigned issues and commenting on other significance for constituents.

10% - Develops procedures for the organization and retrieval of information related to matter and case management.

10% - Contacts internal University staff, as well as some external agencies and clients to gather information.

10% - Serves as the Conflict of Interest Coordinator for the campus, working closely with the COI team at the UC Office of the President.

10% - Monitors and analyzes changes in external regulations, legislation, and UC policies for impact on the University.

10% - Responsible for witness / client interviews needed to establish all relevant facts.

10% - Assists with e-discovery and coordinated all discovery efforts including and not limited to litigation holds,  e-discovery and subpoena responses.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Associates or Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent experience.
  • In-depth knowledge in one or more legal practice areas.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in performing factual and/or legal research to provide summaries of key issues and facts. 
  • Working knowledge of basic principles of California and Federal law.
  • Demonstrated skill in drafting documents such as memoranda, letters, contracts, declarations, and subpoena responses. Ability to proofread, edit, and draft various administrative and legal documents.
  • Strong research and problem solving skills with the ability to obtain information from a variety of sources and materials and organize into a comprehensive package.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated oral communication and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain professional relationships with high level campus administrators, staff and faculty, as well as Office of the President and the General Counsel of The Regents and external constituents.
  • Ability to prioritize a heavy workload with many competing priorities and deadlines.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills to prepare information and files in preparation for a wide variety of administrative needs. 
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a PC, with in-depth knowledge of Microsoft Office and related Windows applications, legal research programs such as Lexis, WestLaw, matter and document management systems and Internet legal resources.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and priviledge. 
  • Ability to work independently while also working as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of legal issues in an educational setting.
  • Working knowledge of UC processes, protocols and procedures.
  • Paralegal certification.
