Assistant Dean & Director of Bar Success, School of Law

About the Opportunity

The Assistant Dean & Director of Bar Success designs, implements, and oversees all aspects of the Law School's efforts to prepare students and graduates to pass the bar examination including, as appropriate, administering student assessments, teaching bar exam-related courses, offering workshops, providing individual advising and support, and working with students on an individual and group basis. Provides workshops and support to graduates in the summer in preparation for the July bar exam; also supports takers at other times. Maintains awareness of bar admission requirements and testing formats; provides general guidance to students, faculty, and administrators with respect to bar admission requirements, testing formats, and the application process. Manages tracking and reporting of bar passage results and develops plans to ensure the effectiveness of the program.

Responsibilities:

Design and Administer Program: Design, implement, and oversee an effective bar passage program for all students. Work collaboratively with faculty, the Director of the Academic Success Program, the Dean of Students, and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs to assess, track, and address the current needs for programming and support for all students, including at-risk students. Track students' bar examination results to focus better the Law School's efforts and to satisfy accreditation reporting requirements; manage required reporting.

Share Information and Expertise: Maintain awareness of bar admission requirements and testing formats; provide general guidance to students, faculty, and administrators with respect to bar admission requirements, testing formats, and the application process. Provide general assistance with respect to bar applications. Support the Dean of Students on questions of character and fitness.

Provide courses, workshops, advising, and other support: Create and maintain an open and welcoming environment for students and advise and support individual students with respect to issues related to their academic success, performance on the bar exam, and admission to the bar. Teach a for-credit bar preparation course, provide non-credit skill development workshops, and work with law students individually and in groups to help each student achieve success on the bar examination. Provide workshops for and meet regularly with students and graduates who are preparing for the bar exam, including during summer months; review sample bar exam essays and provide analysis and feedback to help bar exam takers improve their skills.

External Engagement: Maintain a positive working relationship with bar-related entities outside the law school, including the Massachusetts Board of Bar Examiners and similar entities in other states, as well as commercial bar preparation vendors. Participate in relevant conferences for bar preparation or academic support professionals.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have a JD or comparable degree from an accredited institution by the appointment start date (e.g., JD, LLB or foreign equivalent) and a minimum of three years of experience practicing law or providing law-related instruction in an academic institution or a law firm. Familiarity with bar-tested subjects and bar exam formats is required and experience providing bar preparation in an ABA-accredited law school is preferred. Candidates must have been admitted to a state bar in the United States, preferably Massachusetts.
