Job Description
Under the direction of the IT Manager, this position provides in-house guidance, direction, and support at the College of Law for existing and emerging technologies in a complex and changing digital environment for students, faculty, staff, and, as appropriate, visitors to the College and Law Library; manages College's IT resources, provides analysis and solutions, and performs repair and maintenance on all computer hardware, including network servers, and software applications, including database management.
Responsibilities
Provides Information Technology Guidance, Direction and Support for College of Law Personnel:
- Consults with faculty, staff, and students concerning individual technology issues (usually involving computers and peripherals) on a daily basis, including complex information technology related projects
- Identifies, troubleshoots, and resolves problems with a wide variety of hardware or software
- Assists with software updates, upgrades, and implementation as appropriate
- Provides assistance through techniques that support and promote security and privacy following University and professional guidelines
- Provides back-up support and collaboration for audio/visual requests at the College, as needed.
Manages College's Network Servers and Databases:
- Collaborates with IT Manager and other IT staff to provide network server maintenance, problem solving, and solution implementation, including network connections for devices such as printers.
- Provides database management and administration.
- Evaluates, defines, and makes recommendations or requests for complex equipment, infrastructure creation, and upgrades.
Implements New Hardware:
- Makes recommendations for appropriate new technology
- Prepares new computers, laptops, printers, etc. to communicate with the College and University networks, installing the appropriate software and configuring settings to maximize technology
- Installs new equipment through the University's annual Computer Upgrade Program, Technology Fee program, and new hires at the College, each position requiring a personalized array of hardware and software
- Decommissions equipment now obsolete or being replaced through the University's surplus process.
Maintains Documentation:
- Collaboratively manages through records and logs the technology problems and resolutions received from faculty, staff, and students through the College's "ticket" management system
- Maintains College and University inventories of state equipment
- Documents and controls warranty information for inventory of hardware
- Creates and maintains documentation of surplussed equipment
Collaborates with Outside Entities:
- Coordinates projects with external vendors when appropriate
- Purchases new equipment from external vendors as needed
- Coordinates warranty repairs with external vendors or the University
- Collaborates with University of Tennessee's Office of Information Technology as needed
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Education: Associate's degree
- Experience: Three years of experience, beyond which may be substituted for education on a year for year basis.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Skilled at problem solving and managing PCs and Macs on a number of different hardware/software platforms.
- Ability to analyze complex problems quickly and work in network administration, telecommunications, and system security.
- Knowledgeable with PHP, XML, CSS, HTML, & JavaScript.
- Knowledge of most recent & common IT hardware and software used in higher education
- Skilled at documenting and organizing information
- Ability to communicate well orally and in writing
- Ability to maintain current awareness of new technology and related technological skills
- Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without need now or in the future for sponsorship for employment visa status.
Preferred Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree
- Experience: Prefer experience in an academic setting.
- Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 3 years' experience with Windows PCs, Apple (IOS) or Android phones/tablets; and, networking experience in an enterprise system.
